Wetland Planning Area Reports
The Wetland Planning Area (WPA) Reports identify through GIS analyses wetland priority areas for restoration and protection at the
landscape level. The priority rankings within a watershed are based on the fundamental structural characteristic and proximity of the land itself.
For example, higher restoration priority is given to land with hydrological features and hydric soils verses land that no longer floods and does not
have hydric soils. More priority is given to restoring gaps in riparian corridors and connecting blocks of existing forests. Lands closer to existing
water receive higher priority than those lands further away from water.
The WPA maps are used by county and regional natural resource planners to identify priority areas for conservation. The Wetland Reserve Program in Arkansas currently gives extra points to projects that are within wetland priority areas as mapped through the GIS analyses.
