HGM Classification and Guidebook Development Workshop

The Arkansas Multi-Agency Wetland Planning Team (MAWPT) Will be hosting an HGM Classification and Guidebook Development Workshop October 30th - November 2nd, 2007 at the Peabody Hotel, Little Rock, Arkansas.

Many states want to pursue hydrogeomorphic assessment of wetlands, but don’t know how to begin developing an HGM classification, regional guidebooks, or other tools. Arkansas is the first state to have developed comprehensive HGM classification and published Regional Assessment Guidebooks for its wetlands statewide. Come learn how this was accomplished, and hear about the lessons learned along the way.

The workshop will cover the following:

  • HGM Approach overview
  • Overview of Guidebook Development
  • The Arkansas Approach
  • Statewide Classification vs. Regional Guidebooks
  • Making the classification work with other state goals
  • Functional Profiling
  • Reference Wetland Domains and Sampling
  • A half-day Classification Fieldtrip and Data Collection Demonstration
  • Functional Model Development
  • Calibration of variable subindices to reference data
  • Writing Guidebooks
  • Uses for the Guidebooks
  • Related Tools
  • Grantsmanship and Timelines for HGM Development work
  • 1-day limited fieldtrip detailing application of HGM classification in various ecoregions, from mountains to plains.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn from State-level personnel about the details of developing science-based assessment tools. There will be plenty of time to discuss special situations you may encounter in implementing a guidebook development program in your state. Registration is FREE, and includes attendances at the Sunset Social, all lectures and fieldtrips, and materials.

Hotel Reservations: Please make your reservations directly with the Peabody Hotel (501-906-4000). Conference meeting & guest rooms are located at the Peabody Hotel. Conference guest room rates will be good three days before and after the actual conference, on a space available basis. Please refer to the HGM WORKSHOP-MAWPT when making your reservations. Hotel reservations should be made before October 6th, 2007. There is a free shuttle to and from the airport, and many attractions within walking distance.

  • Single/Double - $104.00 plus tax.
  • Triple/Quad - $114.00/$124.00 plus tax.

For more information, call Elizabeth Murray at 501-223-6356, Debby Davis at 501-682-3830.

The workshop will be led by Ms. Elizabeth Murray and Dr. Charles Klimas. Ms. Murray has worked in wetland science for 15 years and has served as the Coordinator of the Arkansas Multi-Agency Wetland Planning Team the last seven and a half years. She has overseen most of the work on the Arkansas HGM project. Dr. Klimas is currently an ecologist with the Corps Engineer Research Technology Center Environmental Laboratory, and has worked in wetland ecology for over 25 years; he has been the primary consultant on Arkansas' HGM project since its inception. Dr. Klimas has also conducted a variety of wetland and HGM classes on behalf of the Corps.

To register, paste the following sign-up information into an e-mail to Elizabeth Murray, and place a check next to each event you plan to attend. Also include your name, and complete contact information. We will confirm your registration via e-mail, and keep in touch regarding details of the meeting as it approaches.

Workshop Sign Up:
_____ Sunset Social with views of the Arkansas River, Oct 30th, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
_____ Three days of workshop lectures and half-day field trip, Oct 30 - Nov 1, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily
_____ Optional full-day intensive classification field trip covering three ecoregions, Nov 2, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Space is limited on the Friday field trip. This field trip will be most useful to people who want to implement HGM classification and characterization in their own state, and wish to have more time to ask specific implementation-related questions of the workshop presenters, Ms. Elizabeth Murray and Dr. Charles Klimas.

This workshop is made possible through a grant from EPA Region 6.
